Larry-Douglas Embury dedicates “Mighty Mo and All That Jazz” to Joe Patten and Bob Foreman with affection and respect. Joe and Bob have been Larry-Douglas’s mentors since ever since he arrived at the Fox Theatre in May 2002.
This CD came about as a result of Joe’s love of jazz. “Joe’s Song” is an original arrangement by Larry-Douglas composed to honor Joe, in which Joe plays the beginning – on the Chickering reproducing piano in his apartment - and the ending - on Mighty Mo - using the pentatonic scale. Though he is a master organ technician, everyone knows that Joe does not play. But he did for this recording.
In “Joe’s Song,” Larry-Douglas uses all the sounds that Joe likes to hear: the ”Phantom Piano,” playable from the organ; the big reed voices; the locomotive bell and whistle; and a Hammond Organ sound inspired by the organ in Joe’s apartment. A snippet of the Varsity Drag was included to acknowledge Joe’s frequent visits to the Atlanta landmark eatery two blocks from the Fox.
Joe’s performance was added to the CD from privately made recordings. Larry-Douglas on the Steinway concert grand piano, bassist Neal Starkey, and drummer Billy Degnats were recorded at Allgood Studios for inclusion in “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.” Except for these two songs, there is no dubbing on the CD.
The Möller Concert Organ, affectionately called Mighty Mo, and the 6’ Baldwin grand piano are decorated in gold leaf. Each instrument comes up to stage level on its own lift
